Denzel in Pelham Remake

It's not quite Déjà Vu, but Denzel Washington—and moviegoers—have been here before.

The two-time Oscar winner has climbed aboard Columbia Pictures' remake of the classic 1970s subway-jacking drama The Taking of Pelham 1, 2, 3, which will mark his fourth collaboration with filmmaker Tony Scott.

Per Daily Variety, Washington will tackle the role of Lieutenant Zachary "Z" Garber, the New York Transit cop trying to stop a group of hijackers who've taken over a subway train and threatened to kill one hostage a minute if the city doesn't pay them ransom (something like Spike Lee's Inside Man, but on a train).

Walter Matthau played Garber in Joseph Sargent's 1974 original. The late Robert Shaw, Martin Balsam and Hector Elizondo and Earl Hindman played the crooks with the color-coded noms de crime Mr. Blue, Mr. Green, Mr. Gray and Mr. Brown (which Quentin Tarantino paid homage to in 1992's Reservoir Dogs).

Washington, 52, has fast become Scott's go-to guy for gritty action dramas. The two first worked teamed on the 1995 submarine action flick, Crimson Tide, followed by the 2004 revenge thriller Man on Fire and last year's time-bending Déjà Vu.

The actor recently finished American Gangster opposite Russell Crowe for the helmer's older brother, Ridley Scott. That film hits theaters Nov. 2.

The latest version of Pelham was adapted from John Godey's novel of the same name by veteran scribe David Koepp, whose formidable credits include Jurassic Park, Mission: Impossible and the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal and Spider-Man 4.

Pelham will be produced by Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch through their Sony-based company, Escape Artists.

Aside from Gangster, Washington has also completed a second stint in the director's chair for The Great Debaters, a drama based on a true story about a small Texas college debate team that ends up facing off against Harvard for the national championship.

Washington also appears in the film as the team's coach, while fellow Academy Award winner Forrest Whitaker costars.

Shooting on The Taking of Pelham 1, 2, 3 is slated to begin in early 2008.
