DeGeneres Wants to Out "Ellen," Reports Say

Will Ellen come out of the closet? Both today's Hollywood Reporter and the upcoming TV Guide report that star Ellen DeGeneres and the staff of the sitcom are trying to convince Disney, which produces the show and airs it on its network, ABC, to let them follow a plot line in which the lead character announces she's a lesbian. DeGeneres' publicist referred requests for comment to Disney, and the studio said it "won't comment on rumors and speculation."

No decision has been made by Disney, and the big coming out couldn't come until later in the season, the reports say. But TV Guide says that scripts have already been written in which hints are dropped: In one scene, Ellen Morgan is to pop out of a closet and say, "Yeah, there's plenty of room, but it's not very comfortable."

"To have a major character on television who seems to be beloved and funny come out would be unbelievable," says Howard Rosenman, producer of the Emmy-nominated The Celluloid Closet, an HBO documentary about gays in Hollywood. He couldn't think of an openly gay character currently on a network sitcom. Indeed, it's hard to remember another example since Billy Crystal's role on ABC's Soap in 1977. The upcoming Steven Bochco cop comedy, Public Morals, on CBS will feature a lesbian detective.

Disney would have to think long and hard about a gay Ellen. Fundamentalist Christian groups have organized a boycott against the company for giving health benefits to same-sex partners of employees and allowing an unofficial "Gay Day" to take place every year at Disney World. And, of course, politicians have targeted the entertainment industry in general for a supposed lack of "family values."

On the other hand, Ellen needs a boost. The show has had trouble finding an identity (it pokes fun at that by running a different "temporary" opening title sequence every week) and faces tough competition on Wednesday night this fall.
