David Wants Liza's Prenup Tossed
That's the last time David Gest trusts Michael Jackson's matchmaking skills.
Liza Minnelli's estranged husband has asked a judge to set aside his prenuptial agreement with the star, claiming that Minnelli failed to disclose that she had herpes, was an alcoholic and was prone to violence at the time that they wed.
Had Gest been in the know, his attorney argued, he never would have agreed to the prenup.
Minnelli's lawyer, Israel Rubin, declined to comment on specific allegations. "This whole thing is ridiculous," he told the AP.
Gest's legal team has asked California State Supreme Court Judge Harold B. Beeler to order a trial to determine the validity of the agreement.
Gest's request is just the latest development in the couple's lengthy divorce saga.
The warring twosome were introduced by Jackson at his 30th anniversary tribute concert in 2001 and got engaged two months later.
They tied the knot at a lavish ceremony in March 2002, with Jackson and Elizabeth Taylor serving as attendants.
Alas, their wedded bliss was not long for the world. By July 2003, the duo announced they had separated. Minnelli subsequently filed for divorce in October 2003, one day after Gest launched a $10 million lawsuit against her, claiming she beat him while drunk.
Minnelli countersued Gest for $2 million in November 2003, accusing him of stealing money from her, insulting her publicly and trying to fire members of her staff who disagreed with his practices.
More recently, she claimed in court papers that Gest had joined forces with her former assistant and bodyguard, M'Hammed Soumayah, in order to publicly attack and humiliate her.
Soumayeh filed a $100 million lawsuit against his former employer in September 2004, claiming she beat him and forced him to have sex with her in order to keep his job.
Minnelli fought back by suing Soumayeh for breach of contract, seeking at least $250,000 in damages.
