Dave Thankful; Suspect Arraigned

This just in from the home office in New York: David Letterman is grateful to authorities for busting up an alleged kidnapping scheme.

Making his first public appearance since Montana law enforcement announced an arrest in the purported plot to abduct his infant son and nanny, Letterman returned to his Late Show stomping grounds Monday night and briefly commented on the developments.

"Last week, my family and I were involved in a little legal activity, and fortunately everything turned out fine, but I want to just take a second here to thank some people," Letterman said during taping at the Ed Sullivan Theater.

That "legal activity" was last Sunday's arrest of Kelly A. Frank, a 43-year-old painter who had been hired to do some work at Letterman's 2,700-acre Rocky Mountain retreat in Choteau, Montana.

Authorities announced the arrest last Thursday, telling reporters that a friend tipped them off that Frank was planning to kidnap Letterman's 16-month-old son, Harry, along with the boy's au pair and hold them for $5 million ransom. Kelly was charged with felony solicitation, felony theft (for allegedly overcharging Letterman for the painting), and misdemeanor obstruction for allegedly lying to detectives investigating the scheme.

At an arraignment hearing Tuesday, Frank pleaded not guilty to all charges. The handyman--an ex-con on probation for a 1999 conviction for stalking and harassing an ex-girlfriend--is currently being held on $650,000 bail. A court date is pending on whether to have Frank's probation revoked in light of the purported Letterman plot.

Letterman directed his praise to two FBI agents, Teton County Sheriff George Anderson, County Attorney Joe Coble "and the great people of Choteau, Montana."

"They have always made me and my family feel entirely welcome as though it were our home and that's how we think of it," said Letterman.

According to an affidavit filed by Coble, Frank tried to recruit an old acquaintance, Robert Gondeiro, to join to snatch the toddler in a plot reminiscent of the Charles Lindbergh baby kidnapping.

Gondeiro, a former National Guardsman and Gulf War vet who knew Frank since boyhood, claims Frank told him he had a key to Letterman's compound, knew the location of Harry's room and hoped to sweep in once Letterman and girlfriend Regina Lasko returned to the ranch for a visit. Gondeiro immediately alerted police, who nabbed Frank the next morning.

Frank's fiancée says the handyman has been wrongfully accused. She claims Gondeiro has a "personal vendetta" against Frank and tried to incriminate him after the two had a bitter falling out.

As for Letterman, he has a history of giving up the gratis on his show. Four years ago, during his emotional return to the Late Show after undergoing emergency heart bypass surgery, the late-night emcee brought some of his doctors and nurses onstage to show his appreciation.
