Dave Matthews Walks This Way Over Aerosmith

Aerosmith pushed, but the Dave Mathews Band had just too much play.

DMB's Everyday, which opened at number one on the album charts last week, faced a serious contender in round two as the seminal hard rockers in Aerosmith hit the ring with their 13th studio album, Just Push Play. When the dust settled and the smoke cleared, however, it was the Dave Mathews Band still on top by a margin of 40,000 copies.

According to SoundScan figures, Everyday sold 280,000 copies for the week ended March 11, pushing its two-week sales total past the 1 million mark. Aerosmith, who will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday, sold 240,000 copies for a number-two debut. That snaps a streak for the veteran Boston band, whose two previous studio releases, 1993's Get a Grip and 1997's Nine Lives, both made number-one bows.

Shaggy, who was dethroned by DMB two weeks back, continued to sell strong with his comeback album, Hotshot (Shaggy had been dropped from his previous label following a disappointing 1997 release). The disc finished right behind Aerosmith's, selling a solid 235,000 copies at number three.

Don't expect Shaggy to go away any time soon--he has just been tapped as the warm-up act for this summer's Backstreet Boys tour, which will run from June to September.

Meanwhile, the Ruff Ryders' first lady, Eve (also known as Eve of Destruction and Eve Jihan), owned the top 10's only other new entry, as her sophomore release, Scorpion, sold 160,000 copies to debut at number four. The Philly native was originally discovered by Dr. Dre, who produced her "Eve of Destruction" single for the Bullworth soundtrack. Eve later attached herself to DMX's Ruff Ryder camp, collaborating on their Ryde or Die album. Her solo debut followed in 1999.

Familiar faces rounded out the Top 10: DJ Clue's The Professional Part 2 at five, Dido's No Angel at six, The Beatles' 1 at seven, Lenny Kravitz's Greatest Hits at eight, Project Pat's Mista Don't Play at nine, and Ja Rule's Rule 3:36 at 10.

R&B duo Koffee Brown opened at number 32 with their debut album, Mars/Venus. Sacramento's Oleander, named after a poisonous flower that grows throughout Northern California, landed at number 94 with their third full-length album, Unwound. Influential Texan Delbert McClinton, whose achievements include a track on The Blues Brothers soundtrack and teaching the harmonica to a young John Lennon, debuted at 103 with his latest, Nothing Personal. Alien Ant Farm's ANThology opened at number 105. The first artist on Papa Roach's New Noize imprint, Alien Ant Farm heads out on the four-month Raid the Nation tour with Papa Roach on Sunday.

Other notable debuts included Kim Burrell's Live in Concert at 138, the Irish Tenors' Ellis Island at 148, Fred Hammond Presents: In Case You Missed It at 173 and Pam Tillis' Thunder & Roses at 183. And rounding out the new releases was the Fat Wreck Chords compilation Fat Music for Fat People, Vol. 5: Live Fat, Die Young at a hefty 187.
