Dannielynn Turns One
Over the past year, Dannielynn Hope Marshall Birkhead has experienced more drama than most people do in a lifetime.
What better justification to celebrate her first birthday with a princess-themed blowout?
On Saturday, proud papa Larry Birkhead held a party for his daughter at the Louisville, Kentucky, home of socialite Tricia Barnstable Brown, the same spot where he met Anna Nicole Smith in 2003.
Hundreds of guests trailed through the iron gates, which were decorated with pink balloons in the birthday girl's honor, while a hot air balloon shaped like a birthday cake was anchored in the front yard.
The yard was also decorated with an almost life-size white castle, as well as bubble machines and a white carriage, one guest said.
Attendees were required to surrender their cell phones at the gate and to sign a release promising not to take any photos.
Though Dannielynn didn't make any public appearances on her big day, Birkhead said she thoroughly enjoyed the party.
"My daughter had a really, really good time," he told the Associated Press. "Barney the dinosaur came and gave a special performance.
"It really was great to see her smile, especially through all the things that we've been through, just to get to that milestone of one year was just great," he added.
OK! magazine had originally been scheduled to cover the party but pulled out last month, claiming to have unearthed "explosive allegations" about Birkhead and Howard K. Stern.
Said allegations were taken from Rita Cosby's new book about Smith—Blonde Ambition: The Untold Story Behind Anna Nicole Smith's Death—in which she claims that Birkhead and Stern "cut a deal" with regard to Dannielynn and also relates an account of the two men getting "caught in a compromising position."
Both Birkhead and Stern have since threatened to sue Cosby and her publisher.
As for OK! declining to document his daughter's party, Birkhead told E! Online it was simply a case of "sour grapes."
"They can stay home, and there'll be more cake for me and Dannielynn," he said last month.
Dannielynn was born to Smith in the Bahamas on Sept. 7, 2006. Stern originally claimed to be the father, but Birkhead later proved his relationship to the child through paternity testing.
Three days after the baby's birth, her brother, Daniel, died while visiting his mother and newborn sister in the hospital. His death was later ruled to be a lethal overdose of a combination of prescription drugs.
On Feb. 8, Smith herself died at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. Her death, too, was later ruled to be an accidental overdose of a combination of drugs.
Birkhead was granted custody of Dannielynn in April, after DNA testing proved he was her father.
Dannielynn is potentially in position to inherit millions of dollars from the estate of her mother's late husband, oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II.
As for Smith's estate, the California state Franchise Tax Board filed papers in creditor's court Thursday, seeking $1,460 because Smith failed to pay a penalty on her return for the 1995 tax year.
The penalty was originally $170, but continues to increase with interest at a rate of seven percent the longer it goes unpaid.
The estate is currently in probate in Los Angeles Superior Court. Stern has been named the executor of his former companion's affairs.
