D'Angelo Pepper-Sprayed by Police
Not even voodoo could save D'Angelo from a nasty arrest in Virginia on Monday.
The 28-year-old R&B singer, who has remained off the mainstream radar since nabbing two Grammys in 2000 for his multiplatinum album Voodoo, was picked up by cops and had to be doused with pepper spray after he resisted arrest for aggressive driving and other counts, said police.
Apparently, the sexy crooner, who sent the ladies swooning with his nearly nude album cover, rubbed one woman the wrong way. Police say D'Angelo, née Michael Eugene Archer, verbally accosted a woman, whose name has not been released, at a gas station on Sunday following a driving incident.
According to the police report, D'Angelo cut the woman off in the parking lot of a shopping mall. She followed him to a nearby Texaco to confront him for his sloppy driving. At that point, she claims, he starting cursing (dropping the F-bomb and calling her a bitch) and spitting at her. He then sped away. The shocked woman quickly called the cops.
(Cynical readers take note: So far, this doesn't look like a celebrity-lawsuit ploy. "There was no indication that she recognized him for who he is," Captain James Nowlin told MTV News.)
Authorities say D'Angelo violated an "unwanted touch code" with the spitting and a "curse and abuse" law with the swearing, so police in the Richmond neighborhood of Chesterfield were dispatched to the crooner's home on Monday. Once they got there, they had to subdue him with the aforementioned pepper spray in order to bring him in, said Major James B. Bourque.
D'Angelo is charged with aggressive driving, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and "curse and abuse," all misdemeanors. Bourque said the singer was released on his own recognizance pending a January 15 appearance in Chesterfield General Court. If convicted, the R&B star could be looking at 12 months in jail and $2,500 in fines for each charge except for the curse and abuse count, which carries a fine of $500. On top of the fines and potential jail time, the singer may also be in hot water for a previous charge that was unearthed during this legal mess. In April, he was pulled over in New York and ticketed for reckless driving and driving with a suspended license. Chesterfield cops aren't yet dishing on the relevance of that charge or the current status of his license, but, Nowlin said, "There could be some subsequent charges."
This arrest is rather surprising, considering D'Angelo's solid reputation as a soulful ladies' man and his actual status as "son of a preacher man" (his dad is a Pentecostal minister in Richmond).
His style has been compared to the likes of Marvin Gaye and Al Green since he first made waves with the single "U Will Know" on the 1994 Jason's Lyric soundtrack. The release of his debut album, Brown Sugar, in 1995 helped him garner a loyal audience of contemporary R&B fans who dug his unique combination of hip-hop and soul.
D'Angelo's follow-up 2000 album, Voodoo, was an overnight success, debuting at number one. The lead single, "Untitled (How Does It Feel)," nabbed a Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal that same year, and Voodoo won for Best R&B Album.
And the ladies--except, presumably, that one in Richmond--are still talking about the album cover.
