Dancing Across America
What do you get when you stick 14 professional dancers in a bus with a live band and send them off on a two-week cross-country tour?
Why, a Dancing with the Stars road trip, of course.
In ABC's latest bid to promote the fourth season of the fleet-footed reality competition, the network has dispatched a squad of elaborately costumed dancers on a trek across the country that began Monday in New York.
The road trip is scheduled to take the dancers to seven cities in all, and will conclude at the Dancing with the Stars studio in Los Angeles on March 19, coinciding with the season premiere.
At each stop along the way, the road trip team will be holding auditions to suss out the best of the local talent. Those deemed worthy will then be paired up with a pro dancer to perform a short routine in front of a panel of judges.
Video of each city's winner will be posted on abc.com, and fans will then be able to vote for the participant they think should win a grand prize trip to Los Angeles.
Those lacking in the moves department are also in luck, as the road trip team will also be offering free lessons in the cha-cha, hustle, jive and mambo at each stop.
The road trip was due to touch down in Philadelphia Tuesday, before moving on to Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Dallas, Phoenix and finally L.A., hitting city landmarks, sporting events and even a St. Patrick's Day parade along the way.
More information about the tour, including dancer profiles, photos and diaries, is available on dancingwiththestarsroadtrip.com.
The stars competing for the Dancing crown this season include Heather Mills, Joey Fatone, Ian Ziering, Billy Ray Cyrus, Apollo Anton Ohno, Laila Ali, Clyde Drexler, Leeza Gibbons, Shandi Finnessey, Paulina Porizkova and John Ratzenberger.
Ratzenberger, who's best known for playing Cliff the mailman on Cheers, was only added to the cast last week, after Sopranos star Vincent Pastore bowed out due to the show's rigorous physical demands.
