"CSI: New York" Gets Leading Lady
Former Providence star Melina Kanakaredes is trading in Rhode Island for the Empire State.
Kanakaredes has signed on as the female lead in the third installment of CBS' forensic science franchise, CSI: New York.
The actress will play Stella Bonasera, a forensic investigator, opposite Gary Sinise's character, Rick Calucci. His casting was announced last week.
"We've got Mr. Cool and Ms. Warmth," CBS head honcho Leslie Moonves was quoted as saying of the pairing in the Hollywood Reporter. "We're in great shape now on this show. It's really exciting."
Kanakaredes is the fourth regular to join the cast alongside Sinise, 24's Vanessa Ferlito, who'll play crime scene investigator Abigail Martin, and Black Hawk Down's Carmine Giovinazzo, whose character hasn't been revealed.
Viewers will get their first glimpse of the curly-haired beauty and her costars during a May sweeps episode of CSI: Miami, when Horatio Caine (played by David Caruso) travels to New York while investigating a murder.
TV vet Kanakaredes has starred in two other Big Apple-based series--New York News and NYPD Blue--and earned bookend Emmy nominations for her work on Guiding Light. But the thesp got her biggest boost playing Dr. Sydney Hansen on NBC's Providence, which ran from 1999 to 2002.
