Crazed Caruso Fan Convicted of Stalking; Committed

David Caruso, CSI: Miami Cliff Lipson/CBS

Days after getting slapped with a nasty lawsuit  by his ex-girlfriend, David Caruso is getting some good news.

An Austrian court on Tuesday convicted the woman who wrote more than 120 letters to the CSI: Miami star, threatening to murder him for declining to give her an autograph.

Per the Austrian Times, Judge Günther Böhler of the main court of Innsbruck sentenced 42-year-old Heidimarie Schnitzer to seven months in prison followed by a yearlong stint in a mental institution.

When asked by the judge what she was thinking when she threatened to kill both the 53-year-old actor, daughter Greta and ex-girlfriend Liza Marquez (whom Schnitzer called his "butt-ugly Latina whore"), Schnitzer blamed the Web.

"It said in the Internet that every fan gets an autograph, and I wanted one as well. But the threatening was just meant as a joke. I only wanted to attract attention," she told the court.

Schnitzer, an Austrian native, disappeared shortly before her trial was to start in April 2008 and went on the lam until being collared in Mexico last month and deported back to her home country.

Earlier, a court-appointed psychiatrist testified that Caruso's No. 1 fan had a personality disorder, including "strong narcissistic and antisocial characteristics," and warned that she was capable of victimizing the thesp again and others, unless she received at least a year of therapy.

Schnitzer's attorney, Andreas Grabenweger, has appealed the judge's ruling. Caruso's stalker caught a bit of a break, as she could have received three years in jail.

Should she lose the appeal, she could face stiffer penalties, including possibly serving out the maximum term behind bars.

If the current sentence sticks, Schnitzer will be released from the mental ward in January 2011.

A rep for Caruso was unavailable for comment.

While the TV star no longer needs to worry about Schnitzer, he is facing a barrage from Marquez, the mother of two of his children.

Last Thursday, she sued Caruso for emotional abuse and violent threats during their three years together. Caruso's attorney has since denied the allegations.
