"Cradle" Rocks 2 No. 1
DMX marks the spot at the box office.
Cradle 2 the Grave, starring the rapper and his Romeo Must Die cohort Jet Li, dug up $16.5 million over the weekend to open as the nation's new number one movie.
The hip-hop/kung-fu cross-cultural rampage through a tall tale about a diamond heist and gang battles butt-kicked last week's topper, Daredevil, down to third place.
Losing its grip, Ben Affleck's turn as the Marvel Comics hero earned $11.1 million, bringing its three-week gross to $84.2 million, short of the $100 million mark the expensive movie has its sights set on.
Meanwhile, Chicago kicked past that coveted mark, becoming the the 24th film release in 2002 to do so. Kudos and dollars keep flowing in for the Oscar-nominated jazzy musical. Over this weekend, which saw director Rob Marshall win the DGA Award for Best Director, the Miramax release earned $7.9 million in fifth place from a $3,210 per-screen average at 2,447 sites. That brought its total gross to $104.9 million after 10 weeks of release.
Crashing into 2,625 sites, Warner Bros. R-rated Cradle 2 the Grave averaged $6,294 per screen.
Holding up in second place for a second week the raucous frat house comedy Old School earned a solid $14 million, averaging $5,120 at 2,742 sites. That was only a drop-out of 20 percent from the previous weekend, bringing the Will Ferrell laugher a current total gross of $37.4 million.
In contrast, Daredevil, dropping out of 240 sites to 3,234 locations, fell 39 percent, averaging only $3,439.
In limited release, Poolhall Junkies--starring and directed by Mars Callahan and featuring better known Christopher Walken, Rick Schroder, Alison Eastwood, Chazz Palminteri and the late Rod Steiger--didn't hustle up much green. At 179 sites the R-rated Gold Circle/IDP release, about tough times in the baize world, averaged $1,685 to pocket $302,000.
Overall, the top 12 films for the 10th weekend of 2003 grossed $86.4 million, a drop of 9 percent from last weekend, but up more than 5 percent over this time last year.
