Courtney's Plea Deal Hopes Dashed
Courtney Love's legal team is slowly working its way through her congested court docket.
The oft-arrested rocker has been ordered to stand trial Sept. 30 on two felony drug charges for illegal possession of painkillers. Until then, the 40-year-old remains free on her recognizance.
She has pleaded innocent to the charges and recently expressed hope of a plea deal with prosecutors to avoid jail time. No such luck, it seems.
Love, decked out in a loose-knit purple sweater, black tank and black heels, could barely sit still during the 10 minute hearing before Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Elden S. Fox, according to reports from inside the courtroom today.
She pleaded ignorance when the judge asked if the court date was acceptable but agreed after a short confab with her attorney and even thanked Fox before leaving.
If convicted, she could face up to three years and eight months in prison. That's on top of any other sentences the former Hole frontwoman might face on two separate charges of assault.
Judge Fox will get to spend more quality time with the America's Sweetheart singer at an upcoming arraignment Friday on a felony assault charge of whacking another woman with a liquor bottle and a flashlight April 25 at the home of ex-boyfriend Jim Barber.
She also faces charges of assault and reckless endangerment in New York after allegedly bonking a guy in the head with a mike stand during a nightclub show earlier this year.
Not that Love is likely to be headed to the slammer anytime soon. First, she's got to make it through 18 months of court-ordered rehab. The singer was sentenced to go clean and sober last month after she pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count stemming from a cocaine-fueled rampage last fall outside Barber's house.
Love's various legal woes and a stint in an East Coast "institution" have also put the kibosh on a summer concert tour meant to boost flagging sales of her solo album, America's Sweetheart, though her attorney says the singer recently performed at a rock festival in Japan.
