Costas Crowned King Sub
It's good to be King. Just ask Bob Costas.
The veteran sportscaster has signed on to regularly substitute for CNN's Larry King on his nightly talk show.
Costas, 53, will sub for Larry King Live's suspendered newsman roughly 20 times per year, CNN President Jon Klein announced Wednesday.
King's 20-seasons-strong chatfest typically relies on a roster of guest hosts, but this is the first time the network has publicly announced a regular replacement. (King's former go-to sub, Nancy Grace, has moved on to her own show on the cable net's offshoot, Headline News.)
"It's an honor," Costas said in a teleconference Wednesday. "I've been friends with Larry for a long, long time. I've always liked the long-form interview...and Larry's program is synonymous with that format."
Costas should have no problems slipping into the 71-year-old King's hosting chair. The affable Costas is a 17-time Emmy-winner whose three-decade career includes ongoing stints on NBC, where he's served as lead Olympics anchor and held down baseball, football and basketball broadcasting duties, and on HBO, where he hosts three shows. His CostasNOW marks it's fifth-season premiere Friday on the cable net.
Despite his prolific calendar, Costas should have no trouble making time for his latest gig. The majority of his fill-ins will take place in New York and will accommodate his NBC and HBO schedules.
The sports-minded anchorman also wants to make it clear that he doesn't plan on permanently filling King's well-shined shoes.
"I was aware that question was inevitable...I understand that, but really, it's only for the next year," Costas said. "It's only 20 shows."
Make that 20 shows on the news net's top program. Larry King Live has long been CNN's highest rated, most watched show, averaging 1.2 million viewers a night.
Costas' first shot as King's stand-in will be Sunday night at 9 p.m. ET.
