Cornell Not All the Rage
The former Soundgarden frontman is apparently unemployed at the moment, having exited the much ballyhooed band he formed with members of Rage Against the Machine--all before the band could even settle on a name.
No reason was given for the walkout, which was confirmed Tuesday by Cornell's manager.
Before its demise, the short-lived supergroup recorded nearly 20 songs with famed producer Rick Rubin that Epic Records was planning to release later this year. And while the nameless band had yet to play a gig, they were slated to be among the headliners for Ozzy Osbourne's Ozzfest 2002 tour this summer.
Sony reps had "no comment" on the split. Publicists for Ozzfest did not immediately return phone calls.
The new band was said to be a major musical departure for the politically charged Rage, which was left singer-less in October 2000 when frontman Zach de la Rocha quit following a communication breakdown.
Cornell, on the other hand, parted company with his Seattle-based grunge group Soundgarden in 1997. After the lackluster success of his first solo outing, 1999's Euphoria Morning, he began rehearsing with Rage guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk. Something clicked. Backstage at last year's Grammys, Morello said the informal jam sessions with Cornell had been "groundbreaking."
Built around Cornell's octave-shattering pipes, the new sound was reported to be more melody-driven hard rock instead of the funkified rap-rock style pioneered by Rage.
By last spring, reps for both artists' confirmed the project was more than just a one-off experiment.
"Until the boat founders on the shoals, this is as permanent as anything," Rage's manager, Peter Mensch, told the Los Angeles Times at the time.
Time to call in the Coast Guard.
While news of the split may be disappointing to those Cornell and Rage fans who had been eager to hear the new sound, plans are still underway for Epic Records to release an album of original material recorded by the band over the last six months. No word yet on when the collection will hit stores.
