Cops Play Lawsuit with the Game
And the beef goes on.
The Game was sued for defamation this week by five North Carolina cops who didn't appreciate comments the "Hate It or Love It" rapper made last year comparing them to the officers who arrested and were charged with brutalizing Rodney King.
The plaintiffs were the ones at the scene Oct. 28, 2005, when the Game, wearing a Halloween mask, was nabbed at an area shopping mall on charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. According to police, mall security officers asked the rapper to take the mask off and he loudly refused, unleashing a slew of profanity in the process.
Officers Hien Nguyen, Matthew Brown, Ryan Childrey, Romaine Watkins and David Gregory of Greensboro accused the Game (whose real name is Jayceon Taylor) and some of his associates of libel, slander and misappropriating their images.
Their lawsuit singles out the Game's subsequent appearance on local TV in which he said he was merely signing autographs at the Four Seasons Town Centre when the arresting officers ganged up on him.
During the fracas, Watkins zapped some of the Game's entourage with pepper spray after they surrounded the officers in a threatening manner, police said. Watkins has since been investigated and cleared of any wrongdoing in the matter, according to the Greensboro News-Record.
Nguyen, Brown & Co. also took offense at the subsequent release of a video of the incident shot by one of the Game's pals. According to their lawsuit, a Website touting the recording claims that it shows the Game "being wrongfully arrested and brutalized by the police in North Carolina."
Parts of the video, which can be seen on the DVD Stop Snitching/Stop Lying, are currently available on YouTube.com, which has also been named as a defendant in the suit.
The boys in blue are seeking more than $10,000 apiece in damages, with one officer saying that he lost $7,500 in off-duty pay because he was afraid of showing his face at the mall again.
Meanwhile, the Game has a new album, Doctor's Advocate, hitting stores Nov. 14.
