Cops Nab Ike Turner by Mistake

If only the LAPD's computers could keep up with Ike Turner's driving.

The musician and record producer was mistakenly arrested Tuesday night when officers pulled him over for speeding and, upon running a routine warrant check, pulled up an 1989 felony narcotics warrant.

But while Turner, 75, has had his share of drug-related run-ins with the law, including an 18-month prison sentence between 1990 and 1991 for possessing and transporting cocaine, during which he missed his and ex-wife Tina Turner's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, what the cops turned up this week turned out to be null and void.

According to Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman April Harding, the 1989 warrant was never deleted from the system even though it had been recalled the same day it was issued after Turner turned up in court.

Turner's 2002 Mercedes-Benz S-50 was spotted Tuesday at about 11:45 p.m. doing 80-plus miles per hour and straddling lanes on the 405-North freeway in the San Fernando Valley, authorities said.

After police discovered the warrant, the Grammy winner was taken into custody and booked at downtown L.A.'s Twin Towers jail. Turner was released at 3 p.m. after the whole thing was ruled a misunderstanding.

The image-challenged Turner, although a respected force in the music industry, is also largely known for his abusive treatment of Tina Turner during their rocky 16-year union, which was dramatized in the 1993 biopic What's Love Got to Do With It

In his 2001 autobiography, Taking Back My Name, Turner admitted to slapping his wife around and to "times when I punched her to the ground without thinking. But I never beat her," he wrote.
