Coppola Gets Writer's Bloc

Maybe it's time Sofia Coppola start cranking on that Academy Award acceptance speech.

The show-biz scion's offbeat tale of jet-lagged travelers striking up a friendship in Tokyo continues to connect in the Hollywood award season, picking up a key pre-Oscar award on Saturday.

The Writers Guild of America is the latest group to bestow top screenwriting honors on Lost in Translation and its multitalented writer-producer-director, who's already won a Golden Globe for her writing efforts and stands to take home an Oscar next week.

The movie, starring sweetly dysfunctional duo Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson, was named Best Original Screenplay on Saturday at the 56th annual ceremony, which took place simultaneously in New York and Los Angeles.

Coppola did daddy Francis proud. He is three-time WGA Award winner, for his Godfather, Godfather, Part II and Patton scripts.

Meanwhile, American Splendor was something of a surprise winner for Best Adapted Screenplay trophy as the movie's writer-directors Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman, who put their spin on comic book anti-hero Harvey Pekar's self-penned tome, beat out two big-time competitors: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and Mystic River.

The three scripts will square off again next at next Sunday's Oscars, with Seabiscuit and City of God rounding out the category.

On the boob tube side, Fox's 24 took honors for Best Episodic Drama, NBC's Frasier was named Best Episodic Comedy, and The Simpsons scored for Best Animation.
