Conan Meets Finn Twin
Conan O'Brien has finally met his match.
After nearly a year of joking and mock reelection campaigning for look-alike Finnish President Tarja Halonen--and putting to rest any doubt that they are the same person--O'Brien finally had a face-to-face with the politician in Helsinki Tuesday.
Last year, O'Brien joked on Late Night that his show's popularity in the region was likely due to his pale-skinned, red-haired resemblance to Halonen and set out to ensure his Nordic Nielsen domination by campaigning to keep his Finn twin in office.
"Why do I support Tarja Halonen? Because she's got the total package--a dynamic personality, a quick mind and, most importantly, my good looks," O'Brien said during one of his on-air endorsements.
O'Brien regularly began airing reelection ads for "Tarja," both promoting the candidate and containing quasi-smear attacks on her opponents.
One ad featured O'Brien discussing Halonen's rivals, in broken Finnish, with two men while fishing on a frozen lake. After a fish jumps out of the water, O'Brien joked that Halonen's opponent even drives animals to suicide. The ad's tagline: "Fish recognize a bad leader."
After Halonen, 62, won her bid for reelection last month, she invited her doppelganger for a visit to the presidential palace. Her spokeswoman said she wanted to thank O'Brien and admitted that they "might, indeed, resemble each other."
"Once I conquer Finland, I'll head south through the Baltics and on to Belarus," O'Brien said after learning of Halonen's victory, and of course, by association, his own powerful influence abroad. "Soon, all the world will find me mildly amusing."
O'Brien joked at the summit Tuesday that an appropriate reward for his role in Halonen's victory would be an appointment as inspector of saunas, "mostly women's saunas."
"I was hoping very much to get a cabinet position because I very much need the money, but she has invited me to come and visit with my family," said O'Brien.
The Tonight Show heir posed with Halonen for about 15 minutes, at which time they exchanged gifts. O'Brien gave her a box of chocolates in a red heart-shaped box, while he received some Finnish troll dolls.
"Someone like me knows he's lucky to get 15 minutes," O'Brien told the Associated Press of his brief meeting. "It's not every day I get to meet the president of a country."
Nearly 2,000 fans turned up outside the president's estate to cheer O'Brien, who also picked up a Telvis Award in Helsinki for being "the most surprising and entertaining TV personality in Finland."
O'Brien is set to return to the U.S. Wednesday. Footage of his goodwill tour will air on his show next week.
