Coming Soon to Hollywood: Movie Mashups?
TMNT was tops at the box office with $25 million? Really? Now, admittedly, I didn't see it. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are not and will never be my thing. But this just seems sad, that a so-so remake is enough to be king.
It also makes me think Hollywood studios need to get a little more creative.
And it reminded me of something Kurt Russell said at the Grindhouse junket while reflecting on the crapification of the movie business:
"We always liked double features. I remember thinking if we're going to spend the same amount of money for just one movie, then this better be good."
Amen. I hope like hell that Hollywood adopts the Grindhouse model and starts making more twofers. Think about it. Take two movies you wanted to like but couldn't really get the dollars up for. Here's my dream pairing: Black Snake Moan and Poseidon.
Warner Bros. Entertainment, Paramount Vantage
If you ask me, Moan tanked because nobody really wanted to know why Christina Ricci was in those chains, and Poseidon sank because of all that shameless filler plot surrounding Emmy Rossum and her romance woes.
Pare Moan down to 50 minutes of Ricci writhing and Samuel L. Jackson working that guitar and that Bible. Let Poseidon be all about the boat sinking, Freddy Rodriguez getting crushed and then Russell drowning, and you've got one hell of an action movie.
What two movies would you like to see slimmed down for exploitive fun and presented in tandem? Come on and tell me. Let's make this happen.
