Combs Settles Flame-Smacking Suit
Diddy apparently didn't want to dillydally with a trial.
Sean Combs has settled a lawsuit brought against him by a Los Angeles man who claims the hip-hop multihyphenate slugged him following a post-Oscars bash last year in Hollywood, according to paperwork filed Friday in L.A. Superior Court. (View the notice.)
Terms of the settlement were not disclosed, and neither side's attorney immediately returned calls for comment. A trial had been scheduled to begin May 27.
Gerard Rechnitzer sued Combs last March for assault and battery and negligence for allegedly shoving him into a parked taxicab, pushing his girlfriend, yelling threats and then staring menacingly at them from the window of his vehicle outside the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in the wee hours of Feb. 25, 2007.
"What the f--k you looking at, dude? I'll smack flames out your ass!" Combs was accused of screaming, per Rechnitzer's complaint. The plaintiff claimed the melee began when he approached Combs, who was talking with Rechnitzer's girlfriend, Sofia Sokolov, after receiving the OK from Combs' entourage.
The Bad Boy Records founder then went postal, Rechnitzer alleged, after Sokolov refused to accompany Combs to another party.
While court documents filed in January by Rechnitzer's camp claimed four deposed witnesses supported his version of events, Combs attorney Hillary A. Jones said in court that a hotel security video showed that Rechnitzer did not go "flying into a taxi" following the alleged confrontation.
The plaintiff also filed a police report but, following an investigation, prosecutors opted not to file charges.
