Coldplay Chills Out Peas, Stripes

Coldplay is taking over the world at the speed of sound--much to the chagrin of the Black Eyed Peas, White Stripes and Shakira.

In what's become the biggest rock debut so far this year, Coldplay's X&Y is topping the charts in at least 22 countries--"at least," because the number will likely grow as more countries publish their sales figures.

In the U.S., X&Y nailed the number one spot with 737,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan numbers released Wednesday, to easily outpace anticipated new releases from the Blake Eyed Peas, White Stripes and Shakira--all of whom debuted in the top four places of the Billboard 200.

More than 8 percent of the Coldplay sales came via digital format, giving X&Y the biggest sales week ever for a digital release. It also went number one on Apple's iTunes Music Store in every country where the download service is available--this, despite the album leaking out to file-sharing sites before it dropped in stores. Additionally, the video for the lead single, "Speed of Sound," is the most watched rock video on Yahoo! Music.

Across the Pond in the band's native U.K., X&Y moved 464,000 first-week copies in the U.K., making it the second-fastest selling album in that country.

Meanwhile, Coldplay's two previous studio albums, 2002's A Rush of Blood to the Head and 2000's Parachutes, rocketed to 1-2 on Billboard's Pop Catalog Albums chart. Both Grammy-winning discs are already multiplatinum.

Coldplay's 36-city North American trek--dubbed the Twisted Logic Tour--kicks off Aug. 2 at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto; many of the dates are already sold out. The band warms up with a headlining gig at the Live 8 concert in London on July 2.

It was a good week across the board for retailers, with four hot-selling new releases entering stores. The Black Eyed Peas landed at number two, selling 291,000 copies of Monkey Business, featuring the hit "Don't Phunk with My Heart."

The newlywed Jack White celebrated at number three, with the White Stripes' Get Behind Me Satan moving 189,000 discs.

And Shakira landed the final Top 10 bow with her latest Spanish-language album, Fijacion Oral, Vol. 1, selling 157,000 at number four. The English-language counterpart is set for release in November. This marks the Colombia-born singer's first album since her crossover English-language smash Laundry Service in 2001.

Last week's number one, Mariah Carey's The Emancipation of Mimi, fell four spots to number five on 151,000 copies sold.

With the tour ready to set off, the 2005 Warped Tour Compilation hit the charts at 13 on 53,000 copies. The longest running traveling music festival still in existence, the Warped Tour will be headlines by the Transplants, Fall Out Boy and the Offspring.

Other noteworthy debuts included Finch's Say Hello to Sunshine at 24, Jodeci's Back to the Future at 27, Avenged Sevenfold's City of Evil at 30, Dream Theater's Octavarium at 36, Pat Benatar's Greatest Hits at 47, Motion City Soundtrack's Commit This to Memory at 72 and MxPx's Panic at 77.

Wrapping up the major debuts, Kelly Osbourne's Sleeping in the Nothing sold just under 9,000 copies to open at 117. The Ozzy spawn checked into rehab just four days before the album dropped.

Here's a rundown of the Top 10 albums for the week ended Sunday:

1. X&Y, Coldplay

3. Get Behind Me Satan, White Stripes
4. Fijacion Oral, Vol. 1, Shakira
