Cohn's Shooter Off to Trial
The man suspected of shooting Marc Cohn will have his day in court.
Joseph Yacteen, the man accused of shooting the Grammy-winner in the head during a botched carjacking, waived his right to a preliminary hearing Friday, instead opting to head straight to trial.
Yacteen remained silent for the duration of his court appearance.
His next hearing is scheduled for Nov. 29.
Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey filed 19 criminal charges against the 26-year-old suspect in August, including attempted murder. If convicted, Yacteen faces up to 90 years in prison.
Both the "Walking in Memphis" singer and his tour manager, Thomas Dube, were shot in the Aug. 7 incident, which occurred shortly after a performance at the city's Botanical Gardens.
Cohn, who was in the passenger seat of his band's van, was hit in the temple after Yacteen allegedly opened fire in a parking garage. The bullet was slowed by the car's windshield and hit the singer after grazing Dube. Both men were treated at a local hospital and released the following day.
"I touched myself and it was blood all over my hands," Cohn later told ABC's 20/20 of his initial reaction to the frightening experience.
"I realized I was the one who'd been hit...every second that passed by, I thought, that's the last one. That's the last second I'll be here."
Denver authorities say Yacteen was already on the lam the night of his encounter with Cohn, having skipped out on a court appearance.
Per the police report stemming from Cohn's shooting, Yacteen had previously attempted to carjack several vehicles before successfully stealing a Subaru Forester and driving to an abandoned house, where police finally arrested him after a five-hour standoff.
In addition to the attempted murder charge, Yacteen was also booked on second-degree assault, aggravated robbery, two counts of attempted aggravated robbery, 12 counts of menacing and two counts of first-degree criminal trespass. He remains in police custody.
Yacteen's girlfriend, Patricia Vail, was also charged with accessory to a crime and released on $50,000 bond.
The still-shaken singer is back in his New York home recuperating with his wife, ABC correspondent Elizabeth Vargas, and his children.
"This is not something you just sort of go, oh, got carjacked and shot, all right, move on--you don't just move on," Vargas told 20/20 in August.
Cohn has canceled the remaining dates of his summer tour with Suzanne Vega, but vows to make up the missed shows once he gets the go-ahead from his doctors.
