Coachella, Bonnaroo Lineups Revealed

Dedicated concertgoers, rejoice! The lineups for this year's Coachella and Bonnaroo festivals were officially revealed this week, and both of the eclectic rosters offer a little something for just about everyone.

Maintaining what has come to be a tradition of spotlighting hit acts of the '80s, the organizers of the seventh annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival have announced that Depeche Mode will headline the two-day musical festivities in Indio, California, on Saturday, April 29.

"We've always heard so much about Coachella, so it'll be a real honor to headline the festival," the band said in a statement. "It's going to be fantastic to see our devoted Southern California fans out in the desert while greeting a few new faces."

In a revisitation of Coachella's 1999 lineup, Tool is scheduled to close out Sunday's events, performing in the U.S. for the first time since 2002.

More than 80 bands are scheduled to appear over the course of the weekend, including Franz Ferdinand, Modest Mouse, TV on the Radio, Matisyahu, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Scissor Sisters, Cat Power, Common, and the Like, to name a few.

Tickets go on sale Saturday, for $85 a day or $165 for a two-day pass. The festival also offers camping passes for those who want to set up shop on the grounds; less outdoorsy types can book rooms at area hotels, which typically sell out months in advance.

Last year, some 50,000 people thronged to the Empire Polo Fields each day to take in sets by headliners Coldplay and Nine Inch Nails, as well as performances by Wilco, Weezer, the Arcade Fire, Prodigy and a slew of others.

Previous Coachella headlining acts have included the Pixies, the Cure, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Beastie Boys and Jane's Addiction.

In addition to the music, the festival also features a number of art installations, ranging from interactive fire sculptures and massive jungle gyms to short films and blacklight paintings.

Coachella's reputation for edginess makes it the music festival of choice for hipster types. Hippie types, on the other hand, have come to embrace the jam-band sensibilities commonly associated with the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival.

However, this year's Bonnaroo headliners--Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and Radiohead--certainly don't fit the stereotype, which is not surprising, considering an ongoing movement by the festival's organizers to ditch the jam band label.

"We've always resisted being so easily pigeonholed," festival promoter Ashley Capps of A.C. Entertainment told Pollstar.com last year. "Part of our vision behind the Bonnaroo Music Festival was to really be open to all kinds of music as long as it was great music. If there's a thread that could connect all of the Bonnaroo artists, it's simply that they're known for giving great live performances."

Landing Radiohead represents a coup for Bonnaroo organizers, as the performance will mark the band's lone U.S. summer festival appearance.

"We're very excited to have Radiohead be a part of the festival this year--we've been in discussions with them literally for two and a half years," Capps told the Tennessean on Tuesday.

Other acts performing at the fifth annual Bonnaroo Festival, which will take place June 16 through 18 in Manchester, Tennessee, include Bonnie Raitt, Death Cab for Cutie, Ben Folds, Beck and My Morning Jacket.

In an effort to make the event safer and more comfortable for attendees, organizers announced that they were reducing the festival's capacity from 90,000 to 80,000.

"It took us a while to discover exactly what that right number was, but I think at this point we know," Capps told the Tennessean.

Tickets for the festival go on sale Feb. 1, via Bonnaroo.com.
