Classic Acts: Sequel Ya Later, Homie
Lisa O'Connor/ZUMA Press.com
Are you already burned out by this summer's massive number of sequels, tri-quels, quat-quels and even quint-quels?
Well, have no fear. Just when you thought there was nothing to see late on a Friday or Saturday night, the Landmark Theater in the heart of NYC's Lower East Side is hosting midnight screenings of classic flicks every weekend all summer long.
Now, I'm fully aware that most of you don't have immediate access to NYC movie theaters. That doesn't matter. The point is that there are alternatives everywhere, and we moviegoers have choices about how to spend our hard-earned cash.
Having Landmark do this great midnight movie series reminds everyone that while, yes, this is a business (Landmark is owned by 2929 Entertainment bosses Todd Wagner and Mark Cuban), it's a fun business! It's show business! And they are ready to put on some great shows all summer long.
Wherever you're reading this, there's probably a revival theater or festival showing great older movies in your town. Check it out if you’ve got the summertime movie blues. Things start off with the director's cut of Brazil, and continue with some of my favorite films, including Serpico, Ghostbusters and Wet Hot American Summer. Check below for a full summer schedule.
- Brazil (Director’s Cut), June 22-23
- Serpico, June 29-30
- Ghostbusters, July 3-7
- Barbarella, July 13-14
- Back to the Future, July 20-21
- Wet Hot American Summer, July 27-28
- Fantastic Planet, Aug. 3-4
- The Boys in the Band, Aug. 10-11
Visit landmarktheatres.com for showtimes. Tickets for the entire program are on sale at the Sunshine Box Office, over at moviefone.com or at 777-FILM, express code 687.
