Cincinnati Star Cops to Drunken Driving

Here's one role Austin Nichols literally mailed in.

The former star of HBO's John from Cincinnati pleaded guilty to impaired driving Thursday in Jackson, Michigan, and was slapped with a small fine.

The 27-year-old actor entered his plea via mail to the misdemeanor charge of driving while visibly intoxicated. District Judge Joseph Filip in turn fined Nichols $1,000, said the actor didn't have to do any jail time and closed the case.

Nichols, who played the mysterious surfer at the center of the now canceled Cincinnati, was busted in the wee hours of Aug. 24 after driving his silver Mercury Mountaineer the wrong way on a one-way street in downtown Jackson.

He was given a Breathalyzer test, which showed his blood-alcohol level to be 0.10, above the state's 0.08 legal limit. Nichols was taken to Jackson County Jail, where he was booked and released six hours later.

While Nichols' most recent credit was as the paranormal title character on HBO's surf-centric series—axed after a quick ratings wipeout—he has also enjoyed guest stints on HBO's Deadwood and Six Feeet Under.

Other notable roles include playing Jake Gyllenhaal's romantic rival in 2004's The Day After Tomorrow and a tennis pro opposite Kirsten Dunst and Paul Bettany that same year in Wimbledon.
