Christopher Reeve Breaks Leg

Another medical setback for Christopher Reeve.

Spokesman Wesley Combs announced Friday that the actor suffered a broken leg during a workout earlier this month.

Reeve, who requires extensive physical therapy following his near-fatal 1995 riding accident, was undergoing his routine exercise regimen August 17 when he sustained the broken bone.

A few days later, the actor, who turns 48 on September 25, underwent a "simple procedure" in Los Angeles to set the let, Combs says. The leg should heal in six to eight weeks, according to the spokesman, at which time Reeve will resume his workouts.

Victims of spinal cord injuries suffer reduced bone density, which often leads to breaks. Therefore, patients must undergo rigorous physical therapy to build bone mass. Combs says even though Reeve exercises daily, the cause of the break is most likely due to weakened bones.

An avid horseman, Reeve was tossed from his mount in 1995, snapping his spinal cord and leaving him paralyzed and on a respirator.

Despite being confined to a wheelchair, the former Superman has since returned to his show-biz life, directing and even starring in several projects, including 1998's Golden Globe-nominated The Rear Window and 1997's Emmy-nominated Into the Gloaming. He also continues to lobby for research into spinal cord injuries and possible cures.

Reeve, who's currently recuperating at his New York home, "thanks everyone for their good wishes," Combs says.
