Chicks to Toby: Cluck You?
For the love of country music, let this controversy die.
Just as the storm over Natalie Maines' politically charged comments about President Bush appeared to pass, radio stations are squawking anew over the Dixie Chicks' opinionated frontwoman.
Tongues were set wagging after the singer appeared to be taking a potshot at fellow country musician Toby Keith during the band's May 21 performance via satellite at the Academy of Country Music Awards. Splashed across the busty babe's sleeveless tee were the letters F.U.T.K.
Definitely a four-letter smackdown was the general consensus among the boot-strapping set in attendance, who booed the Texas trio, and even presenter Vince Gill. After crowning Keith as Entertainer of the Year, Gill fanned the flames when he said, "I think his name was on someone's shirt tonight."
The Chicks' reps remained cryptic about Maines' intentions. "We don't know anything about it," said a spokesperson when reached today.
But according to country radio programmers quoted in Billboard today, Maines' message came through loud and clear.
"With all the patriotism in the air that night, it was a downer and completely unnecessary," WXTU Philadelphia assistant programming director-music director Cadillac Jack told Billboard. "I was disappointed with them yet again."
Those sentiments were echoed by disappointed KZKX Lincoln, Nebraska, programming director Brian Jennings. "Just when you think it's safe to add the Chicks back into rotation. Oh, Natalie, why do you make it so hard to love you."
The tiff between the two country music superstars stems from Keith's patriotic single "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)," which Maines openly criticized last year. Keith retaliated, publicly belittling Maines' songwriting skills. Since then, he's projected images of Maines and Saddam Hussein on big screens behind the stage when he's performing concerts.
For the near future, though, country radio programmers can be assured that Maines won't be spouting off: She's under doctor's orders to remain mum.
The Chicks canceled a date in Cleveland on Sunday because Maines came down with bad pipes. It was the first time the band has canceled a performance due to illness, according to a statement on their Website.
According to the online apology to fans: "Natalie was told by doctors that she shouldn't perform. She has been nursing a cold and fighting allergies for the past week or so and that, along with our crazy road schedule, has caused her to lose her voice," read the statement.
The show has been rescheduled for June 11.
Germs were also behind the band's decision to postpone an upcoming date in Toronto due to the city's SARS virus. On Monday the Chicks announced the June 12 show would be pushed back to August 6.
