Charles Sheen, Poet

Just as you were getting used to the idea of "Charles" Sheen, here comes: Charles Sheen, Poet.

The oft-busted and rehabed posterboy for problem celebrities has joined the ranks of Percy Shelley (and Jewel) with A Peace of My Mind, a collection of prose from the star of Major League.

The book was released last month by Engram Publishing.

"I can only hope you enjoy reading these poems as much as I enjoyed writing 'em," the 33-year-old actor notes in the preface.

The tome features 84 poems--from "The Big White Phone" to "Good Shit" to the obligatory "Livin' in Sin" ("Head aches--/Back aches--/Breath smells too--").

Engram's Freddy Goeske describes the compositions as alternately sarcastic, satirical and cynical. Ultimately, he says, they are the work of "a solid writer."

A sample: "Doctor, doctor, is it fair?/They cut off all my Medicare." (From "Doctor.")

Never one to toe the line, Sheen mixes and matches free verse with old-fashioned (and out-of-fashion) rhyming verse. And for hardy readers, he offers the 105-line epic, "The Ballad of Larrin La Grow," apparently not about the 1970s journeyman baseball reliever, Lerrin Lagrow.

Sheen writes that the poems, drafted over a 15-year period, reflect his views on "things like death, love, hate, religion, politics and sometimes hallowed absurdity." (Sorry, nothing here on Hot Shots!)

Several years ago, Sheen issued a self-published volume, Goeske says. But, the publishing executive notes, "I don't think he was ready to let them go to the public."

Engram contacted the actor last July to see if he was ready to do the real thing. Sheen, fresh from rehab and his latest vow to renounce "destructive appetites," was.

"He put a lot of work into it...to get it to where he wanted it," Goeske says.

Still, Goeske is realistic about how the literary world will embrace the movie star, if at all.

"I don't think they're going to give a guy without a college degree who hasn't lived by a pond as a hermit for 10 years [a break]," Goeske says.

If the Algonquin Round Table won't have Sheen, he can always get a table at the Hollywood Squares booth. Fellow entertainers who have committed their deepest thoughts to print, include folkie Jewel, Jimmy Stewart and Suzanne Somers.

A Peace of My Mind is currently available only via the Web (www.sheenpeace.com).
