Celine's Would-Be Blackmailers Jailed

It appears that Celine Dion and her husband's good reputation will indeed go on.

Las Vegas cops have nabbed an alleged would-be blackmailer on extortion charges for trying to demand hush money over claims the pop chanteuse's geriatric hubby, Rene Angelil, committed rape.

Yun Kyeong Kwon Sung and her husband, Ae Hoe Kwon, of Pasadena, California, were arrested Thursday and hauled off to the Clark County, Nevada, Detention Center. They face felony charges of extortion and soliciting a bribe and a misdemeanor count of conspiracy to commit extortion.

The couple had filed a police report and a civil lawsuit alleging that Angelil sexually assaulted Sung, 47, at the Imperial Palace hotel-casino. The filings came in March 2002--exactly two years after the alleged incident occurred.

Angelil has since maintained his innocence and sicced his lawyers on the Kwons. The two camps had been engaged in settlement talks.

Police began investigating the case more than a month ago, after a meeting between attorneys. Police Captain Tom Lozich said a police detective sat in on the meeting, where it became "very clear and apparent that we had an extortion."

The police are keeping mum on the exact details of the case but say they were alerted to the crime by Angelil's legal team, which says they are pleased with the arrests.

"Apparently, these people have now been accused of trying to extort Mr. Angelil," David Chesnoff, Angelil's criminal attorney, told the Associated Press. "We're pleased the police have taken this action."

Lawyers for the Kwons are not offering comment, but Sung is also facing other criminal charges in Vegas. She is accused of racking up three unpaid casino markers for $100,000 apiece and one for $200,000. She also faces four felony charges for writing bad checks. She is due back in court March 27 for the extortion case.

For now, police are continuing the investigation on the assault case and hope to wrap up that legal snafu in the next two weeks. "We're done with all our interviews and all that," Lieutenant Jeff Carlson, head of the sexual-assault unit, told AP. "We're just waiting for one more piece to be analyzed."

It would behoove Angelil and his gazillion-album-selling bride to receive a quick end to the matter and focus the media's attention on her upcoming projects instead. The Grammy-winning singer of the Titanic hit "My Heart Will Go On" is currently being featured incessantly on the boob tube in a multimillion-dollar ad campaign for Chrysler. She's also gearing up for her Elvis-like run as the headliner in her own, specially built Roman colosseum at Caesar's Palace. She's getting $100 million for a three-year, five-night-per-week show which kicks off in March.
