Celebs to Prez: Give Peace a Chance

President Bartlet is taking on President Bush.

West Wing star Martin Sheen joined with other activist-minded actors, including Mike Farrell and Tony Shalhoub, at a press conference Tuesday to urge President Bush not to go to war with Iraq.

"War is a reflection of despair, and I refuse to accept despair," said Sheen. "We are called to be peacemakers."

The TV prez and his colleagues unveiled a peace-seeking petition asking the real President to pursue diplomatic disarmament of Saddam Hussein.

More than 100 entertainers, along with diplomats, politicians, veterans and former military brass, signed the letter, which warned that war with Iraq would fuel anti-American sentiment, "increase human suffering, increase the likelihood of terrorist attacks, damage the economy and undermine our moral standing in the world." (The full text with complete list of signers is online at www.iraqpolicy.com.)

The self-professed patriotic Americans say they do support United Nations inspections to make sure Saddam isn't stockpiling weapons of mass destruction but don't support the President's war-hawking rhetoric.

"Support within the entertainment community for this statement in opposition of war is unprecedented," said Farrell, cofounder of Artists United to Win Without War and the person who mobilized the entertainers. Farrell currently stars on Providence but is best known for his portrayal of army medic B.J. Hunnicut on M*A*S*H.

Among the high-profile people adding their John Hancock to the list were fellow Bartlet administration staffers Lily Tomlin, Bradley Whitford and Janel Moloney, Oscar winners Matt Damon, Jessica Lange, Helen Hunt, Olympia Dukakis, Jonathan Demme and Susan Sarandon.

"As an American and a mother, I am concerned that an unprovoked attack on Iraq will only increase the threat of terrorism here in the U.S. and abroad," said Sarandon.

Her beau, Tim Robbins, was also among the signees, as were R.E.M., Jane Kaczmarek, Bonnie Raitt, Laurence Fishburne, Alfre Woodard, Danny Glover, Noah Wyle, Ethan Hawke, Don Cheadle, Té Leoni and ex-X-Filers David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson.

Surprisingly MIA, however, was Barbra Streisand, who's maintained a vocal opposition to the Bush administration on her personal Website. She has remained publicly mum about the current prospect of going to war.
