Cash Out of Hospital
The Man in Black is hurting no more.
Johnny Cash was released from a Nashville hospital Tuesday and is now back at his Tennessee home, two weeks after being felled by a nasty stomach ailment, confirms manager Lou Robin.
"He's feeling much better and looking forward to coming to California sometime next week to finish his album," Robin tells E! Online.
According to Robin, the 71-year-old music legend had come down with what doctors said was a form of pancreatitis, an inflammation of the stomach. Robin says the pancreatitis was not related to Cash's autonomic neuropathy, a disease afflicting the central nervous system that makes him extremely susceptible to pneumonia.
The bug forced Cash to miss out on the MTV Video Music Awards last month in New York, where the video for his Nine Inch Nails cover "Hurt" was up for six prizes and snagged one, for Best Cinematography.
Robin says Cash was too groggy to watch the show from his hospital bed, but he was touched by an unexpected shout out during the ceremony.
"They had him pretty sedated due to his illness. But he was very excited," says Robin. "When his daughter walked in to his room the next day [and told him about the show], he looked up and said, 'Justin Timberlake!' He got a big kick out of what Justin said. He was very appreciative."
Upon accepting his Moon Man for Best Pop Video, the 'N Syncer said, "My grandfather raised me on Johnny Cash, and I think he deserves this more than any of us in here tonight."
In a statement released Wednesday, Cash says, "I'm excited about my video "Hurt" winning the MTV cinematography award. The making of the video was a great experience for me."
Once Cash comes around, he's due back in the studio with friend and producer Rick Rubin to finish up work on his next release, tentatively titled American V.
"He and Rick will be spending a couple of weeks at Rick's studio listening and?going through the 52 tracks Johnny has already put down," explains Robin, who says Cash and Rubin will ultimately select 16 songs that fit an appropriate theme.
The follow-up album to American IV: The Man Comes Around is due out early next year.
In the meantime, fans can content themselves with Wildwood Flower, the last CD from Cash's wife, June Carter Cash, who died in May of complications from heart surgery. That disc hit stores this week.
