Carson Death Certificate Released
Even in death, Johnny Carson was elusive.
Upon his passing last month, statements released by his family and NBC indicated the famously private former Tonight Show host died at his Malibu home. No other information was divulged.
But now new details have emerged with the public release Wednesday of his death certificate.
The document indicates that the 79-year-old Carson died at 6:50 a.m. on Jan. 23 at Los Angeles' Cedar-Sinai Medical Center, not at his home.
The cause of death is listed as respiratory arrest brought on by 20 years of emphysema.
Carson first revealed he was battling the incurable lung disease in September of 2002. The affliction is typically linked to cigarette smoking, a longtime habit of the comic's.
The former Tonight Show host had been beset by various health problems since his retirement more than a decade ago. He underwent a quadruple heart bypass in March 1999.
Carson's family did not hold any public service for him. Instead, his remains were cremated at Forest Lawn-Hollywood Hills and given to his wife, Alexis.
With no official memorial, it was left to Carson's late-night heirs to salute their forebear.
Jay Leno dedicated his Jan. 23 Tonight Show telecast to the man he replaced, saying, "No single individual has had as great an impact on television as Johnny.
"He was the gold standard."
The following week, David Letterman used Carson-penned jokes for his entire Late Show monologue.
"He created the template for that show, and everybody else who is doing a show, myself included, we're all kind of secretly doing Johnny's Tonight Show," Letterman said. "And the reason we're all doing Johnny's Tonight Show is because you think, 'Well, if I do Johnny's Tonight Show, maybe I'll be a little like Johnny, and people will like me more.' "
