Carrey, Damon Flee Hotel Fire
No one said anything about a celebrity roast on the publicity schedule.
Jim Carrey, Matt Damon, and Mick Jagger were among the stars forced to make a beeline for the exits after a fire broke out at London's posh Claridge's Hotel on Thursday morning.
While the incident sounds like a remake of The Towering Inferno with an A-list cast, it was hardly material for a disaster drama.
According to published reports, a small blaze began in the kitchen of Claridge's top-rated restaurant run by celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay and set off alarms, spurring the hotel to evacuate its occupants as a precaution.
Unfortunately, no one bothered to tell Carrey, who was inside promoting his latest flick, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, which opened today in theaters. Coincidentally, that film is a darkly fantastical tale about three wealthy children who become orphaned after their parents die in a fire and are sent to live with their wicked uncle, Count Olaf (Carrey), who plots to take over their inheritance--an irony the Oscar nominee was quick to make light of.
"The movie's all about fire and disaster and so I get up for the [press] junket today and suddenly my house is burning down, and I'm on the balcony like a damsel screaming with a very high pitched voice," the funnyman complained half-jokingly to Reuters. "No one rescued me, no one came, I had to find my own way out."
A series of unfortunate events indeed.
Luckily as it was only a minor incident, no one was in any real danger and there were no reports of injuries or damage. But Carrey wasn't the only actor affected by the fire.
Fellow thesps Brad Pitt and Matt Damon were forced to scrap a final press conference hyping their blockbuster sequel, Ocean's Twelve, though only Damon was in the building at the time of the blaze.
"We love being in London and we are all very disappointed to have had to cancel this event but it was due to circumstances beyond anyone's control," producer Jerry Weintraub said in a statement.
According to Hello magazine, Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger was also spotted by witnesses bolting from the hotel as well. No word what he was doing there.
In any case, the fire didn't stop Carrey from attending Lemony Snicket's premiere later that night in nearby Leicester Square with co-star Meryl Streep. And in typical Carrey fashion, he cracked wise about it later on.
Predicting a hot run at the box office, the comic actor quipped: "I think it's a very good sign."
