But how exactly did Carey Mulligan go from walking the red carpet to walking down the aisle with Mumford & Sons frontman Marcus Mumford in just over a year?
Other than surprisingly quickly, we mean. Here's a look back at the neither long nor particularly winding road that brought these adorable newlyweds together…
October 2010: After more than a year of dating, Mulligan and Shia LaBeouf (or rather, sources close to them) confirm they have called it quits. The duo was first linked in August 2009 after the costars met on the set of Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps.
October 2010: Just a few weeks after word of the breakup, well, broke, Carey turned up at the Hollywood Awards with fellow Brit actor Tom Sturridge (though they went to some major and ultimately unsuccessful lengths to avoid being caught out). According to reports of the evening, R.Pattz's bestie and Mulligan didn't seem particularly coupley during the night, so perhaps we can chalk this one up to nothing more than a shoulder to cry on.
December 2010: Mumford breaks off a nearly yearlong romance of his own, cutting short his relationship made in Brit folk-rock heaven with fellow U.K. songbird Laura Marling.
January 2011: Rebound, thy name is…Eddie Redmayne, if rumors are to be believed. As Carey is notoriously tight-lipped about her private life, it remains unclear if these two acting Brits were just friends or if they flirted with some benefits, but the duo was caught smiling up a storm while strolling arm-in-arm in New York. Of course, they also have quite a history of being purely platonic, having served as copresenters at the BAFTAs and even previously been spotted chatting it up at the Costume Institute Gala.
February 2011: Another month, another piece of rumored man-candy. Which may have led to the most fortuitous meet of Carey's life. Just a few weeks after being photographed with Redmayne, the An Education actress was again caught out by paparazzi, this time while hanging out with Jake Gyllenhaal in no fewer than two metropoli. First, the duo attended a performance of Three Sisters in New York (which costarred his sister Maggie Gyllenhaal and brother-in-law Peter Sarsgaard—who also previously costarred with Mulligan) in NYC. Just a few days later, the maybe-couple was spotted again on a night out in Nashville. On the schedule for their suspected date: sharing dinner at the City House restaurant after attending (wait for it) a private performance from Mumford & Sons at a local house party. Awkward…
March 2011: That must've been some show Mumford & Sons put on…the following month, it's officially game on as reports surface that Carey and Marcus are not only a couple but a superserious one. Mulligan reportedly wasted no time in leaving her NYC homebase and moved to Mumford's London home. They were also spotted on romantic trips to the English countryside and the Orkney Islands in Scotland.
April 2011: The Grammy-nominated Mumford & Sons begin their U.S. tour with a noteworthy A-list roadie in tow: Mulligan is spotted with the band on nearly every one of their show stops (adorably so, in some cases…skip to 00:24 and try not to smile).
September 2011: Despite building speculation, neither star sees fit to discuss the nature of their relationship, though it all seems to be a moot point when Carey turns up at the Sydney Airport and blinds all surrounding paparazzi with her new ring bling. Both sides refuse to comment on whether the sparkler is indeed an engagement ring, though, well, we know how that turned out.
March 2012: After keeping a low profile, spending awards season promoting her movie Shame and filming The Great Gatsby while simultaneously doing her best to keep her private life private, a newly brunette (and bewigged) Carey emerges (accompanied by her fiancé) on the New York City set of her new movie, Inside Llewyn Davis. Just a few days later, she's spotted toting empty shipping boxes into her apartment. Event preparations, anyone?
April 21, 2012: Carey Mumford has a certain ring to it. After just over a year as a couple, Mulligan and Mumford quietly tie the knot in an intimate ceremony in front of family and friends in the British countryside. Congrats, you two!
