Carey Has Barker's Blessing
Drew Carey is definitely not in Bob Barker's doghouse.
The retired Price Is Right host said in a statement Tuesday that he's "happy" for the comic who has been tapped to inherit his game-show gig. And he sounded even more pleased by a promise that Carey made to him.
"He said he would close the show with my spay-neuter plug for as long as he does The Price Is Right," Barker said.
For years, Barker concluded each episode of Price with a plea for viewers to spay and neuter their pets in the name of animal population control.
Carey will get in his two cents for the cause starting in September. He was named Price host on Monday, closing the deal with CBS only minutes before appearing on the network's Late Show with David Letterman.
Barker joked he was hoping that the search for his replacement would drag on for a couple of years—"because CBS would have to use my reruns and I could sit at home and be handsomely paid for it."
Carey and Barker had a "nice talk on the phone," Barker said. The former Price host suggested the incoming Price host rest up for the rigors of "Come on down!"-ing by taking a monthlong cruise.
"I told him that my only advice for him was to keep his guard up because The Price Is Right contestants can be dangerous," Barker said.
Barker, 83, braved the Price wars for 35 years, stepping down in June, his camera-perfect hair intact.
Concluded Barker: "The nicest wish that I can have for Drew is that The Price Is Right is as good for him as it was for me."
