"Capote" Tops National Critics' List
Brokeback what? Heath who? As far as the National Society of Film Critics is concerned, Capote is the one to watch.
During its annual powwow at Manhattan eatery Sardi's on Saturday, the group named Capote the Best Film of 2005, but it was by no means an easy decision.
It took six rounds of ballots before the 45 critics who make up the National Society finally awarded the drama the top honor. The film tells the tale of Truman Capote's obsession with the murders of a wealthy Kansas family, which he chronicled in the true-crime classic In Cold Blood.
Mafia tale A History of Violence was named the second best film of the year, while 2046, the story of a former newspaper editor's exploits in a hotel room, took third place.
Philip Seymour Hoffman won the society's Best Actor prize for his transformation into the quirky Capote. Jeff Daniels took second place for his portrayal of a divorced father of two in The Squid and the Whale and that Heath guy took third place for his work as a gay cowboy in the little-known film Brokeback Mountain.
Walk the Line star Reese Witherspoon won the society's vote for Best Actress for her portrayal of June Carter Cash in the biopic. Keira Knightley took home second place for her work in Pride and Prejudice, while Vera Farmiga (Down to the Bone) and Kate Dollenmayer (Funny Ha Ha) tied for third place.
The Best Director award went to David Cronenberg for A History of Violence, and Ed Harris won Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of gangster Carl Fogarty. Amy Adams took home Best Supporting Actress for Junebug.
Noah Baumbach's The Squid and the Whale was awarded the Best Screenplay Prize.
Grizzly Man, Werner Herzog's documentary about Timothy Treadwell, who lived among grizzlies in Alaska for years before being mauled to death by them, won the group's vote for Best Nonfiction Film.
German director Fatih Akin's Gegen die Wand (Head On), about second-generation Turks living in Germany, won the society's honor for Best Foreign Language Film. 2046 was awarded Best Cinematography.
The National Society of Film Critics is made up of a selection of the nation's top critics who come together annually to determine their picks for the year's best and brightest.
