Cameron Courts Another Win
Chalk up another legal victory for Cameron Diaz.
The Charlie's Angels star has accepted undisclosed libel damages and a public apology from U.K. tabloid the Sun after it published a story alleging that she was caught in a makeout session with a married television producer.
The story was accompanied by photos of Diaz embracing Shane Nickerson, a producer on her MTV show, Trippin'.
The nature of the clinch was impossible to determine from the pictures, but both Diaz, who is dating Justin Timberlake, and Nickerson, who has a year-old daughter with his wife, denied that anything untoward happened.
However, the Sun claimed that Diaz ducked into the bushes for a three-minute "snog" with Nickerson that was caught on film by an intrepid paparazzo.
Diaz was outraged by the tale and rapidly sicced her legal hounds on the tabloid.
"Shane is a friend and associate of Cameron's, who works with her on her MTV show, Trippin'," her rep, Brad Carafelli, said at the time. "He is not a public figure and, because of these lies and misrepresentaions, he and his family are being hounded and harrassed by the tabloid media. There is absolutely no romantic relationship between them whatsoever, contrary to these sad, mean-spirited attempts to create drama where none exists."
Nickerson took to his blog to chronicle the event, calling it a "ludicrous story."
On Friday, the tabloid finally accepted that its version of events was inaccurate.
Diaz's lawyer, Simon Smith, said the Sun now realized that the incident "involved no more than Ms. Diaz giving a friend a goodbye hug and any suggestion of a romantic involvement is entirely untrue and without any substance whatsoever."
The Sun apologized to Diaz and admitted that the story should never have been published.
Diaz has similar legal action pending against the National Enquirer, which also published a story linking her to Nickerson.
It's been a good week for Diaz, as far as the legal system is concerned.
On Monday, the Shrek star scored another court victory when a jury found photographer John Rutter guilty of attempted grand theft, forgery and perjury in connection with steamy topless pictures he took of Diaz before her meteoric rise to fame.
Rutter faces up to six years in state prison when he is sentenced on Sept. 15.
Lesson learned--don't go head to head in a courtroom with an Angel looking to keep her image intact.
