Cameron Cops to Commie Carryall
When it comes to serious fashion faux pas, Cameron Diaz has it in the bag.
The globe-trotting actress issued a statement of apology to the people of Peru Sunday after donning a kicky, though ill-advised, tote bag emblazoned with one of Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong's most infamous political slogans.
Unfortunately, Diaz didn't quite grasp what the red star and Chinese characters on her olive green bag signified, nor that Peru lost nearly 70,000 citizens in a Maoist insurgency throughout the '80s and '90s.
Oops.
"I sincerely apologize to anyone I may have inadvertently offended," she said in a statement to the Associated Press. "The bag was a purchase I made as a tourist in China and I did not realize the potentially hurtful nature of the slogan printed on it.
"I'm sorry for any people's pain and suffering and it was certainly never my intention to reopen what I now know is a painful wound in this country's history."
Diaz's sartorial slip was caught by the local fashion police on Friday, when the actress was photographed with the messenger bag while touring the Incan city of Machu Picchu. In addition to the bright red star emblazoned on the bag, Chinese characters also print out the words "Serve the People."
The Shrek the Third star immediately went into damage control, talking to the AP about the "warmth and beauty" she experienced in Peruvians and her wish "for their continued healing."
Shortly after photographs of Diaz with the Commie carryall made the rounds, she was lambasted by local human rights activist Pablo Rojas, who said the thesp's choice of accessories "alludes to a concept that did so much damage to Peru, that brought about so many victims."
"I don't think she should have used that bag where the followers of that ideology did so much damage."
As it is, Diaz was visiting the country as part of Canada's 4 REAL, a TV program focusing on young community leaders around the world and which was seeking to shine a spotlight on local Peruvian culture.
