Caan Cans Marriage
It looks like the odds were against James Caan on the home front.
The Las Vegas star has filed for divorce from Linda Stokes Caan, his wife of nine and a half years, citing irreconcilable differences, his publicist confirmed Wednesday.
No other reasons were given for the split.
"I love and respect my wife as a friend and as a mother," Caan said in a statement issued through rep Paul Bloch. "Our goal in life is to continue to be great parents and great friends. Our children are our entire lives, and they will remain as such."
The 65-year-old thesp filed the petition in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday, seeking joint custody over the couple's two children, nine-year-old James Jr. and six-year-old Jacob. Caan also requested the court not order him to pay spousal support.
Caan and Stokes tied the knot on Oct. 7, 1995. It was the fourth marriage for the New York-born actor, who has three kids from previous unions.
He is best known for his Oscar-nominated role of Santino "Sonny" Corleone, the hot-headed son of Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather. Other credits include Brian's Song, Funny Lady, Rollerball, Alien Nation, Dick Tracy, Bottle Rocket, Honeymoon in Vegas and Misery.
Caan's been on a hot streak of late. In 2003, he appeared in Lars von Trier's critically acclaimed art-house drama Dogville and had a holiday hit with Elf.
Currently, Caan has transitioned to the tube where he plays Edward "Big Ed" Deline, chief of security for the fictional Montecito Resort and Casino in the NBC drama Las Vegas, which the network just renewed for a third season.
He also has reconnected with his Godfather roots, reprising his role as Sonny in the upcoming videogame based on the 1972 gangster classic.
