Bustin' Busta
Busta Rhymes was just trying to fire it up, when he jumped onstage at a Massachusetts bar for an impromptu concert.
But claims of assault are threatening to ruin the rapper's good intentions.
Rhymes (aka Trevor Smith Jr) was tearing the roof off a spur-of-the-moment show at Jake's Twin Saloons in Fall River, Massachusetts, December 7, when he allegedly assaulted one of the bar's patrons according to a hearing held Tuesday.
Now, it's up to Clerk Magistrate Ronald A. Valcourt, who oversaw the show-cause hearing, to decide whether there's enough evidence to charge the 30-year-old rapper with assault and battery.
Valcourt, who will make his decision within the next "two weeks or so," according to local newspaper The Herald News, will have to weigh the claims of one Celine Giguerre, who contends that Rhymes shoved her and pulled her hair after the spontaneous show.
If Valcourt finds enough evidence against the singer-actor, Rhymes will be formally charged and have to return to Fall River for an arraignment hearing.
Calls to Rhymes' publicist and management company were not returned.
Rhymes has been a relatively good boy ever since he was sentenced to five years probation in 1999, after New York City cops busted him with an unregistered firearm. It's unclear how the potential charges could affect his probation status.
Recently, Rhymes found himself calling on New York's finest for help, when his SUV was riddled with bullets during a drive-by shooting. In February, his black GMC Suburban, empty at the time, was shot up in front of Violator Management's offices on West 25th Street in Manhattan.
The firm, which manages hip-hop heavyweights, including Rhymes, 50 Cent, Missy Elliott, Capone-N-Noreaga, beefed up security after the drive-by--it was the company's second shelling this year. In January, a shooter opened fire in the firm's reception area. No one was hurt.
Meanwhile, Rhymes, whose collaboration with Mariah Carey, "I Know What You Want," is perched at number six on the Billboard singles chart, has no plans to hide out at home. The entertainer is scheduled to perform several summer concert shows, including a May 9 date with 50 Cent and Fabolous in Rhode Island (provided none of the trouble-prone trio are incarcerated or dead) and a June 3 show at Giant's Stadium.
