Bush Gets O'Brien's "Access"

Celebrities, prepare to be Bush-whacked.

Billy Bush--the person Billy Crystal dubbed "the most annoying man in show business" following his harassment of celebs at this year's Oscars--has been bumped up to cohost status on Access Hollywood, a seat left vacant by the departure of the more seasoned (and far less annoying) Pat O'Brien.

Bush, 32, is the first cousin of President Bush (their fathers are brothers). Before graduating to bugging celebs on Access--a position he's held down for three years as the show's East Coast correspondent--he hosted the short-lived 2003 version of Let's Make a Deal and served as a contributor to The Today Show.

He will now relocate to Los Angeles to work alongside Nancy O'Dell, who has been with NBC Universal's syndicated show since its 1996 launch and just signed a new multiyear contract.

The 54-year-old O'Brien, who has 22 years of broadcasting experience, including a long stint at CBS Sports before joining Access, will leave the syndicated show Friday after a seven-year stint. According to a statement from the Access brain trust, the parting was amicable.

"Pat loves Access Hollywood. He helped put it on the map," the show's executive producer Rob Silverstein said Wednesday. "Billy was always the choice to replace Pat. This was the right time to make this happen."

Indeed, speaking to the Washington Post, O'Brien said, "Billy's great....They knew I was leaving, so their preemptive strike was to announce this. I'm happy for Billy, happy for Nancy."

O'Brien's contract with Access has expired and it was an open secret he was planning to bail if producers didn't come up with a decent offer.

There had been rumors that O'Brien, a broadcaster with 22 years of experience, might return to Access' more highly rated rival, Entertainment Tonight, but he is instead close to signing on for ET's newly minted cousin, The Insider, which is also produced by Paramount Television and slated to premiere Sept. 13.

A source close to the production downplayed reports that The Insider is going to be another tabloidal take on celebdom. "Entertainment Tonight is 'who and what happened.' The Insider is the 'why and wow' of what happens," the source said.

O'Brien will join former Good Morning America correspondent Lara Spencer, who is already in place as cohost.

Although O'Brien is jumping ship, he still has a few more assignments for NBC Universal. He will be staying awake around the clock this summer to host a morning Olympics show for the company's Bravo cable network and the first week of NBC's late-night coverage of the games from Athens.
