Burton, Carrey Can't "Believe It"
Like it or not, Tim Burton and Jim Carrey's Believe It or Not project has been put on hold.
Paramount Pictures Chairman Brad Grey has sent the film, based on the adventures of newspaperman and oddities collector Robert Ripley, back to the drawing board due to its swelling budget, according to trade reports.
The film, starring Carrey as Ripley, had been scheduled to begin production in November, but has now been pushed back indefinitely after its budget came in over $150 million.
"We are looking forward to making Ripley's with Tim and Jim; just later than originally expected," Paramount President Gail Berman said in a statement.
Burton fans need not despair, however. The Edwards Scissorhands helmer will instead take on the film adaptation of Sweeney Todd, the Broadway musical which just captured the Best Director Tony Award on Sunday night.
Johnny Depp is attached to star in the film, which tells the tale of a murderous barber who cuts the throats of his customers as a means of revenge. It will be produced through Paramount's DreamWorks studio.
Carrey fans, on the other hand, may have reason for concern. Ripley's Believe It or Not marks the actor's second big project to be derailed in recent weeks. Used Guys, a comedy about a futuristic world run by women, was nixed by Fox in May after its budget came in at $112 million.
However, Burton and Carrey are reportedly still in active discussions about making creative changes to Ripley's, which Paramount cites as evidence that the film will be made eventually.
"We intend to make the movie with Tim and Jim, and the fact they are meeting later this week to continue working on the script shows our intent to go forward," Brad Weston, Paramount's co-president of production, told Variety.
In the meantime, Carrey is next slated to appear in the Joel Schumacher-directed psychological thriller The Number 23 about a man who becomes obsessed with an obscure book by that title because he is convinced that it is based on his life.
The film is scheduled for release sometime in 2007.
