Bubba's Brush with Road Rage
To paraphrase the film that launched his career: Run, Mykelti, run!
Mykelti Williamson, who played Tom Hanks' shrimp-happy best pal Bubba in 1994's Forrest Gump, was on the wrong end of a road-rage incident Tuesday morning, when a gun-brandishing motorist allegedly accosted the actor on a downtown Los Angeles street, yelling racial epithets and threatening to shoot Williamson.
Williamson was driving on the 105 Freeway when he purportedly began being tailed by 26-year-old Ernesto Diaz of Los Angeles. And Diaz wasn't exactly planning to give the actor a box of chocolates.
Williamson told Los Angeles' KNBC-TV that Diaz pulled up alongside Williamson's car and began berating the 45-year-old African-American actor with racial slurs. He then allegedly screamed, "I have your license, and you're dead."
A shaken Williamson, whose credits also include the defunct NBC series Boomtown, exited the highway with Diaz following. The actor says he pulled to the side to let Diaz pass, but instead, the man pulled his vehicle in front of Williamson's. Diaz then allegedly exited his car, walked over to Williamson and pointed a pistol in the actor's face.
"I could see the rage in his eyes. He was out of control, completely out of control," Williamson told Los Angeles' KCAL-TV.
Williamson said he believed the presence of two female witnesses in the vicinity prevented things from getting worse.
"That man could've very well killed me. That was a huge gun," Williamson told KNBC. "He felt in complete control of the situation, and that's probably why he didn't fire."
Williamson jotted down the license plate and immediately called the cops, who nabbed Diaz a few miles away and rung him up on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and committing hate crimes.
According to Sergeant Mike Bartlebaugh of the Gardena Police Department, Diaz is being held on $50,000 bond and has a hearing scheduled for Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court.
"I'm overjoyed that he's off the street, but that was one guy with a gun. There's a whole lot more guys like that," Williamson told KNBC, referring to a recent spate of freeway shootings in Southern California that have left four people dead.
After dreaming up a thousand kind of shrimp dishes as Private Benjamin Buford "Bubba" Blue in Forrest Gump, which garnered him an MTV Movie Award nomination for Best Breakthrough Performance, Williamson has gone on to appear in How to Make An American Quilt, Heat, Waiting to Exhale, Three Kings, Ali and, more recently, The Assassination of Richard Nixon and After the Sunset.
