Brooke's Suddenly Sneaky Nuptials?
Not since yoga and adopted children has there been a celebrity fad as hot as faking your own wedding, and it appears that Shields has now jumped on the faux-nuptial bandwagon.
Columnist Liz Smith reports the former Suddenly Susan star exchanged vows Saturday with Spin City writer-producer Chris Henchy--one month after the twosome apparently staged an elaborate mock ceremony.
Shields' publicist initially denied, then later confirmed, the actress had eloped, supposedly tying the knot during an April 4 wedding on Catalina Island. Photos of the ceremony were then sold to several international magazines.
However, in one of those only-in-Hollywood-scenarios, Smith reports the island wedding was staged, complete with mannequins, to throw off stalkers and paparazzi.
The real wedding took place last Saturday, according to Smith, "in a beautiful garden by the Atlantic Ocean," at the Palm Beach, Florida, home of Broadway producer Terry Allen Kramer. A Roman Catholic priest presided over the ceremony (Shields reportedly had her previous marriage to tennis star Andre Agassi annulled), and the wedding was attended by Shields' dad, Frank, and her formerly estranged mother, Teri.
Shields' publicist did not immediately return calls for comment on the fake ceremony. But at the time, Shields and Henchy did say they planned to have a larger affair "in the near future." Entertainment Tonight, meanwhile, says that's exactly what happened, with Saturday's ceremony merely a "formalized" event for 75 friends and family members.
Shields, who turns 36 Thursday, would not be the first celeb to spin mock wedding tales. Drew Barrymore and Tom Green created an art form out of false wedding rumors and contradictory statements, telling the press a host of different stories, and then plotting a fake ceremony on Saturday Night Live. They finally got their stories straight in April, announcing that they had indeed married. (We think.)
In a more long-term public put-on, Janet Jackson kept her marriage to Rene Elizondo quiet for a whopping nine years, until Elizondo filed for divorce last May.
Shields presumably had good reason to keep things low-profile, considering her past stalker troubles. Last September, a New Jersey accountant was sentenced to probation for allegedly stalking Shields for 15 years. Mark Ronald Bailey was arrested after he allegedly sent threatening letters and nude photos of himself to Shields.
Whatever her reasoning for the clandestine nuptials, this marks Shields' second matrimonial go-around, after marrying Agassi in 1997. (They divorced just two years later.) This is the first marriage for Henchy.
