Brooke Tops TomKat with Baby News

Brooke Shields has beaten Tom Cruise to the nursery announcement.

Shields, 40, who traded sound bites with Cruise over his views on postpartum depression treatment, gave birth Tuesday morning to a 7-pound, 20-inch girl, the actor's publicist confirmed to E! News.

Word of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' baby spread later Tuesday, with the couple's publicist confirming the birth around 4 p.m. (PT). It was not immediately known which baby, Shields' or Cruise's, debuted first. Both were girls, both were about the same size and weight and both were born at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica. In fact, sources tell E! News, both were born on the very same hospital floor.

Shields' new addition, named Grier Hammond, is the second child for her and husband, Chris Henchy, 42, a screenwriter (Entourage). Their daughter Rowan turns three next month.

Last year, Cruise and Holmes announced their pregnancy within weeks of Shields going public with hers.

It was also last year that Shields and Cruise, 43, waged a bitter war in the press over prescription medication.

Cruise fired the first shot, noting in an interview that Shields was "irresponsible" for talking about how the anti-depressant Paxil helped her overcome depression after the birth of her first daughter.

Shields responded by calling Cruise "dangerous," and suggested the star stick to "saving the world from aliens," a reference to the 2005 Cruise film, War of the Worlds.

Shields, the model turned actress, wrote about her experience with postpartum depression in her 2005 memoir, Down Came the Rain. She recently told People that her second pregnancy had been "a lot easier."

"And nothing is going to shock me anymore," Shields said in the magazine. "I am more prepared."

Shields starred in, and Cruise made his film debut in, the 1981 drama about a doomed teen romance, Endless Love. The two haven't worked together since. Which is probably best for all parties concerned.
