Brooke Back in Baby Way

So, what happens if Brooke Shields runs into Tom Cruise at the OB-GYN's office?

The mind boggles at that potentially awkward celebrity moment with word that Shields is expecting her second child with screenwriter husband Chris Henchy.

The news followed Cruise's announcement three weeks ago that he was coproducing a baby with fiancée Katie Holmes.

Shields' publicist confirmed the actress' pregnancy Thursday to E! News. The baby was said to be due in the spring.

There was no reason to believe Shields and Holmes actually share the same practitioner. For the love of world peace, we can only pray that they don't.

Over the summer, Shields and Cruise engaged in an unfriendly debate on postpartum depression therapies. To recap: Shields said the antidepressant Paxil helped pull her through a bad spell following the birth of her first child; Cruise suggested the drug had deadened Shields' career; Shields said Cruise's comments were "dangerous"; Cruise said Shields' comments were misinformed; Shields reminded Cruise that he had no first-hand knowledge on what it's like to suffer postpartum depression.

And then the summer ended. The sparring partners and former Endless Love costars returned to their respective corners--and made babies.

During Shields' book tour for Down Came the Rain, her memoir about battling postpartum depression, the actress revealed she was weaning herself off Paxil with an eye toward conceiving a second child.

Shields, 40, and Henchy, 41, wed in 2001. Their daughter, Rowan, was born in 2003.

The newly expectant Shields wraps her Broadway run in Chicago next week.
