Britney's in the Producing Zone

Could Britney be about to redeem herself for Crossroads?

We're not sure if that's possible, but the platinum pop tart is close to inking a deal to executive produce a movie for ABC Family. Fortunately, though, she won't star in the G-rated flick from Lions Gate TV.

The untitled telepic is based on a book Spears wrote with mama Spears, Lynne, who's also on board as an executive producer.

A Mother's Gift is the 2001 semi-autobiographical novel from the singer and her mom, who wax poetic about family love and loyalty.

The saccharine-sweet story revolves around a small town Southern girl who's suddenly accepted into a prestigious music school, which means leaving mom and her humble beginnings behind. Some 240 pages later they all live happily ever after--we paraphrase.

Production is expected to begin in early January in Toronto to meet an April air date. No word on casting. A rep for ABC Family denied trade reports that Spears might make a cameo in the telefilm.

A Mother's Gift wasn't even the Spears women's first literary effort. In 1999, the duo offered fans Britney Spears' Heart to Heart, an autobiographical paperback published by Three Rivers Press. The younger Spears also penned a companion diary to her feature debut, the infamous Crossroads.

Spears' potential collaboration with ABC Family comes on the heels of two appearances on its parent network. She'll yak with ABC News' Diane Sawyer on Thursday's edition of Primetime. Then on Monday, she'll star in an original prime-time special Britney Spears: In the Zone, which will feature performance footage with a behind-the-scenes look at her hectic schedule.

Finally, all the hoopla will come to a head with the release of her new album, In the Zone, which hits stores November 18.

Britney won't exactly be spreading the joy, however, having just pulled out of a concert on NBC's Today show.

She reportedly canceled her performance on the morning show because the network aired a feature about her, titled "Britney Unzipped," on Dateline Sunday that the popster was none to pleased about.

NBC's mishandling of another diva has also been to ABC's benefit, reports the New York Post. Pink pulled out of the Peacock's Women Who Rock concert series after she was warned that her Today show concert on Friday would be canceled if she appeared on Live with Regis and Kelly on Tuesday. The spunky singer did Live and will now appear on Good Morning America this Friday instead.
