Britney Hit with Lawsuit
Britney Spears has been hit with a lawsuit, one more time.
Indiana songwriter Steve Wallace is suing the pregnant popster for copyright infringement, alleging that he wrote the song "Sometimes," which appears on Spears' albums ...Baby One More Time and Greatest Hits: My Prerogative some 15 years ago.
Records show that the "Oops" singer obtained the copyright for the song in January 1999.
Wallace's court documents, filed in federal court on May 5, acknowledge that he did not formerly copyright the song until 2003.
However, weeks after writing the song in 1990, Wallace, 34, says he obtained a "poor man's copyright"--namely sealing the song in an envelope and mailing it to himself in order to obtain a postmark.
He claims he shopped the song to publishers in 1994 and entered it in a Pennsylvania lyrics concert in 1997. A side-by-side comparison shows that Wallace's lyrics are nearly identical to the ones Spears sings in her version of "Sometimes."
Included in Wallace's court filing is an email allegedly from Spears, in which she writes: "I now know for a fact that you wrote 'Sometimes.' But there's nothing I can do about it. That's all I can say about it."
It's unclear from the documents when the email was written.
The songwriter, who pens country, gospel and pop songs, suffers from dystonia, a neurological condition that results in tremors and prevents him from talking, his attorney, John Ritchison said.
Wallace is seeking $150,000 for each instance of copyright infringement. It was not clear if he would be seeking additional damages.
Spears' camp had no comment on the lawsuit.
Meanwhile, Spears and Kevin Federline are preparing for the release of their upcoming reality show, Britney and Kevin: Chaotic, which premieres on Tuesday.
The series will feature camera footage shot by the couple beginning from when they met at a Hollywood club in 2004 and leading up to their surprise September wedding.
Spears writes on her Website that the series is a response to "constant rumors and inaccurate speculation about our lives together. I feel that last year the tabloids ran my life, and I am really excited about showing my fans what really happened."
