Brit, K-Fed Nip Court in the Bud?
It was a regular meeting of the minds.
While the rest of the free world is still prattling on about Britney Spears' ill-fated attempt at a comeback at the VMAs, the tabloid fixture spent Wednesday talking about slightly more important matters during a covert face-to-face with Kevin Federline.
As originally reported by E! Online Planet Gossip columnist Marc Malkin, the onetime dynamic duo met at the Los Angeles offices of Spears' attorney, Laura Wasser, Wednesday afternoon in an attempt to work out the details of their ongoing custody battle.
The exes arrived separately to the Century City offices, with Federline entering through the building's main lobby and the suddenly attention-shy Spears making her way through a private side entrance.
Neither party has commented on the meeting, which happened to fall on the first birthday of youngest son Jayden. However, sources familiar with the situation say Spears and Federline are trying to resolve their differences before a scheduled Monday hearing in family court.
However, as of Thursday morning, the hearing was still on.
Federline has been lobbying since July for primary physical and legal custody of sons Sean Preston and Jayden James, as well as an increase in his monthly stipend from Spears.
In a legal declaration filed last month, Federline attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan requested that Spears not only pony up $50,000 to cover her ex's legal fees stemming from the divorce but continue and possibly increase his monthly spousal-support payments of $20,000. Those payments are scheduled to stop lining Federline's pockets come November.
In a closed-door hearing last week, Kaplan confirmed that the former househusband was seeking additional custody privileges but did not specify what those were. It's unclear whether any advances were made during the session either, though both Kaplan and Wasser emerged from the courtroom telling reporters they were pleased with the trajectory of the case.
Federline threw a birthday party for the boys at his Los Angeles-area home last Sunday, hours before Spears flamed out at the Video Music Awards. The party was attended by her estranged parents, Jamie and Lynn.
It would behoove the former fun couple to reach a deal quickly. There's a separate hearing set for Friday—which happens to be son Sean's second birthday—on whether certain documents related to their divorce be made public. Spears and Federline agree they want to keep the details under wraps, but news organizations are petitioning the judge to unseal the paperwork.
In the wake of her VMAs disaster, Spears also would be wise to minimize the bad publicity in advance of her comeback album, which is slated for a Nov. 13 release.
