"Bridget Jones" Finds Number One

This weekend nobody could keep up with Ms. Jones.

Expanded to more screens and buoyed by strong word-of-mouth, Bridget Jones's Diary took over the number one box-office slot with $10.2 million, according to final studio reports Monday.

The romantic comedy starring Renée Zellweger as the love-starved Brit, pipped the persistent Spy Kids, pushing the family-friendly hit down to second place with $10.1 million after three weeks on top.

By adding 610 theaters, Bridget Jones blossomed from last week's third place debut. The Miramax release, which is already stirring sequel talk, averaged $4,600 per 2,221 sites, only dropping 5 percent of its audience. Its two-week gross is now $25.3 million. According to studio demo trackers, women are making return trips to the flick with girlfriends or even men in tow. Meanwhile, the film is still wowing them in Britain, despite some early fears over Zellweger's casting--its 10-day haul across the Pond stands at about $22 million.

There was less joy for a couple of male pranksters: Aussie Paul Hogan and Canadian Tom Green.

Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles, Hogan's return stunt as the naive Outbacker from Down Under, arrived with just $7.7 million in fourth place, behind Spy Kids and Morgan Freeman's thriller Along Came a Spider, which took in $8.8 million in third place in its third week.

The take for Hogan's Paramount release was close to the $8 million the first Dundee debuted with in 1986--but that was in just 879 theaters. The comedy adventure eventually grossed a whopping $174.7 million domestically. The 1988 sequel opened with a huge $24.4 million and eventually grossed $109.3 million. This third go-round is clearly not on track to match the success of its predecessors.

Freddy Got Fingered, Green's low blow gross-out comedy, was hoisted by its own petard. The Fox release debuted with just $7.1 million in fifth place.

Spy Kids, a Dimension release, averaged $3,200 at 3,191 sites and has now grossed $87 million.

The best per screen average belonged to Miramax's French import With a Friend Like Harry, which averaged about $14,000 on each of two screens. Also making a bit of a mark in limited release was Artisan's unrated The Center of the World. The soft-core sexual adventure, which opened Wednesday, rated $9,700 per seven screens.

MGM's offbeat Western The Claim dug up just $4,100 per each of its 23 sites.
